Textiles
Knitting
I learned to knit from a friend's mom on a camping trip when I was 6. I primarily knit practical everyday items like socks.
Crochet
I learned to crochet from books when I was 8, and now mostly use it to make little mushroom charms.
Spinning
I learned to spin when I was 10 at a fall festival. My main focus now is on spinning fine to medium weight yarn that's well suited for the utilitarian projects I find most rewarding. Much of the fiber I use is wool I get as raw fleeces and prepare for spinning myself and with friends and family. I'm beginning to explore growing, processing, and spinning bast fibers like nettle and linen.
I love teaching spinning, especially with a drop spindle -- the most ancient, portable, and accessible way to make yarn.
Weaving
I had to wait until I was 27 to learn to weave. I learned from Travis Meinolf and the community and library at Meinolf Weaving School. As with knitting and spinning, I prefer to weave utilitarian things like blankets and garments, often inspired by ancient textiles found in European bogs. I take great satisfaction in the math of weaving and the endless opportunities for meticulous care and somatic learning.
